A former Project SEARCH intern at Calico has become the first participant from the programme to win at the Burnley College Awards for Excellence.
Louis Fairclough received the award at Burnley College’s annual Awards for Excellence ceremony at the Impact Conference Centre. The event celebrates students who have achieved exceptional results and was attended by students, families, carers, teaching staff, the Mayor and the College Principal.
Louis was recognised for the work he put in during his supported internship with Calico, as well as for completing a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification in Maths in his own time.
During his internship with Calico Homes’ Independent Living team, Louis continually pushed himself to try new things and take on challenges that were outside his comfort zone. Over the course of the year, he showed determination, resilience and a real willingness to learn, leading to significant personal growth.
His achievement is particularly notable as he is the first Project SEARCH intern to receive the award, setting a high standard for future interns who follow in his footsteps.
Carlie Johnson, Head of Maths and English at Burnley College, said: “We are very proud of the progress Louis has made and he has shown real resilience and dedication in achieving his maths qualification. I am delighted that he has been given this award to highlight his success.”
Project SEARCH is one of a range of employment opportunities delivered by The Calico Enterprise Employability Team, and Louis hopes to continue his journey after applying for a permanent apprenticeship role within the Group’s Independent Living team, where he completed his internship.
Speaking on Louis’ achievement, Project SEARCH Employment Coach Maria Bolton said: “Louis should be so proud of how much he has achieved this year.
“He has embraced this year on Project SEARCH and it has been so inspiring to listen to Louis start to believe he is ready for work and hear his plans for the future.
“Having the chance to work isn’t just about earning a wage; it is about purpose, belonging and the opportunity to live a great life. I can’t wait to see what comes next, Louis.”
