Muhammad, a second-year college student, had doubts about his future when he realised that college wasn’t for him.
As he had no prior work experience, he feared that finding a job would be a challenge. That’s when he reached out to Calico Enterprise’s Steps to Employment project, where he met Chris Lofthouse, an Employment Coach who would change everything.
“I was unsure if I was even applying for the right jobs or if my qualifications matched the roles I was looking at. I faced so many challenges,” Muhammad shared. “But all of that changed when I met Chris.”
From their first appointment, Muhammad knew he was in good hands. “Chris was polite and kind. He reassured me that he’d help me land a job or an apprenticeship that would help me develop my career and myself as a person,” Muhammad recalled. After that initial meeting, he felt more confident and optimistic about his future.
Chris’s guidance proved invaluable. Through regular sessions, Muhammad’s confidence grew, and he began to set clear career goals. “At first, I was clueless about what career I wanted, but after working with Chris, I had a clear goal and was working towards it.”
Chris not only helped Muhammad build his CV and prepare for interviews, but he also applied for jobs on Muhammad’s behalf and carefully selected vacancies and programmes that matched his skills and interests. Even when Muhammad couldn’t make appointments, Chris sent him job leads and advice to help him stand out in the job market.
The support paid off when Muhammad secured a role at Calico, where he now works as a Data Reporting Administrator in the Facilities team. “I organise fleet check reports, operate internal systems to log inspections and contracts, and book vehicles for MOTs, services, and repairs,” he explained. “I absolutely love my job.”
Looking back, Muhammad credits Chris’s constant reassurance and support for helping him get where he is today. “If anyone wants to get into work, approach Calico Steps to Employment and ask for Chris Lofthouse. He’s the best in the game!” Muhammad said, expressing his gratitude.
Thanks to Chris and the Steps to Employment project, Muhammad has found his path and is thriving in his new role.
