After leaving education, 17-year-old Joe from Padiham wanted to head straight into the world of work.
Here’s his employment journey…
Like many young people, Joe didn’t see himself as academic. He preferred more practical roles and wanted to pursue something office based.
After seeking support from Steps to Employment, Joe flew through his first interview and was accepted into a sales position in Blackburn after just three days.
However, the 17-year-old soon found himself thrown into the role without the right support or guidance from management. Unfortunately, due to the lack of training, the role didn’t work out for Joe.
Chris Lofthouse, Joe’s Steps to Employment coach, said: “When he was let down, it affected his confidence massively. He felt like it was his fault.”
Before applying for new positions, Chris worked with Joe to re-build the confidence he lost. They worked together to build his CV and improve his interview skills before applying for anything new.
Finding a role that fits
After re-building his confidence, the pair decided on an apprenticeship to ensure Joe received the right training and support. This way, he could gain experience in the workplace and build new skills whilst receiving structured guidance.
Although an apprenticeship would mean he was still technically in education, Joe would have the hands-on experience he craved.
Once he was interview ready, Joe soon secured an apprenticeship role at one of the UK’s leading plastic manufacturers where he’s studying his Level 2 Administration apprenticeship through Accrington and Rossendale College.
Based in Accrington, Joe is loving working in the same town as his favourite football team – Accrington Stanley.
What’s next for Joe?
Joe wants to complete his apprenticeship and aims to pursue a career in administration and customer service.
Chris continued: “His communication skills and IT skills have developed within his apprenticeship. I still check-in with him and provide advice Joe whenever he needs it”.
