Molly didn’t care much for her job as a dinner lady – and thanks to Steps to Employment, she cares about her fulfilling new career.
After leaving college, Molly didn’t know what she wanted to do career wise. She found herself in jobs she disliked, whilst juggling the responsibilities of looking after her dad.
She explained: “I went into cleaning when I was 19 at the school then went into being a dinner lady. It was just a normal job”.
To find a role that worked for her wellbeing and her responsibilities as a carer for her dad, Molly attended a Steps to Employment drop-in, where she was introduced to her employment coach Charlotte Ellwood.
Charlotte began working on Molly’s CV with her and building up her interview confidence, before arranging an interview at Rossendale House Care Home. Following interview success, Molly is now working as a care assistant and enjoys the variety each day brings.
She continued: “Care work is rewarding, and you can see how it helps people. I go home knowing I’ve helped make a difference”.
Talking about the favourite parts of her role, she said: “I enjoy being able to have 1-1 time with them, seeing them smile and having a chit chat. It makes my day. There’s one gentleman who has dementia but he’s so lovely. I enjoy taking the time to sit and talk to him. It’s a nice feeling to sit and involve people who sometimes feel isolated”.
Molly discovered the Steps to Employment programme through her boyfriend Declan, who came across an advert on social media. After popping into a drop-in at Down Town, Molly was introduced to Charlotte.
The 21-year-old explained: “My visits are more like having a cup of tea with a friend who gives you a bit of good advice and helps you along the way. It isn’t formal and there’s no feeling of anxiety.
She continued: “I can speak to her about worries and issues and it’s always in a friendly environment. There’s no pressure to do anything. Charlotte understood that I couldn’t jump back into full time work because of my responsibilities at home and for someone to understand my mental health in the process.
This type of employment support isn’t available anywhere else that I can see – we’ve found it ourselves and it’s a really great service. It baffles me that more providers don’t offer anything similar”.
Chalotte is now working with Molly’s partner Declan. Whilst seeking a new role, he’s enjoying volunteering at Burnley Mechanics.
