Young people in Burnley are being encouraged to take advantage of a new opportunity to build digital skills, gain confidence and explore a future career in technology.
The AI Digital Champion programme, part of the TECHFIRST AI Apprenticeship Pathways scheme, will take place in Burnley this September and is aimed at young people aged 16 to 19 who are currently not in education, employment or training. Information provided by the delivery team also suggests applicants aged up to 24 may be considered. The programme is free to attend and places are limited.
The opportunity is being supported locally by the Calico Enterprise Employability Team, which has been helping identify young people who could benefit and connect them with the programme through its networks and partnerships across Burnley. Calico has also provided classroom space at Centenary Court for part of the programme.
Delivered from Lancashire University’s Newtown Mill campus in Burnley, the nine day programme gives participants the chance to work on real digital challenges, create content, explore emerging AI technology and develop ideas to present to employers. No previous experience is required.
Participants will also receive technology, travel support and meals throughout the programme, helping remove some of the practical barriers that can prevent young people from taking part.
For some young people, the biggest challenge is not a lack of potential but a lack of opportunity or a clear route into work. The AI Digital Champion programme has been designed to help participants gain experience, develop new skills and build confidence in what they could do next.
Those who complete the programme may also be considered for a paid Level 3 Digital Support Technician apprenticeship with a Burnley based employer, starting this autumn with a minimum salary of £18,000 per year.
Still some places available
There are still a small number of places available for Burnley applicants. Current promotional material states there are only five places available in Burnley.
