Kickstart new starters welcomed

We have created 30 paid work placement opportunities as part of the Government’s Kickstart programme, designed to give employment opportunities to 16-24 year olds currently claiming Universal Credit. The 6 month paid positions are all designed to help younger people at risk of long term unemployment.

We have created the new roles specifically for the Kickstart programme, with opportunities  at our residential care home Barley View, within our homelessness and housing service Gateway, and on key projects through our construction company Ring Stones.

All of the young people have a dedicated Employment Coach supporting them throughout the process, offering guidance whilst working through a  s tailored development plan to increase their employability prospects.

Younger people are at the centre of the jobs crisis as a result of Covid and Kickstart has been created to help prevent those claiming Universal Credit from becoming long-term unemployed. This has been a key part of a recent pledge made by The Calico Group to create 120 opportunities for younger people whose employment prospects have been impacted as a result of the pandemic.

After being inducted into his new position as Project Administrator for The Calico Group’s shared apprenticeship programme ‘Constructing the Future’ , Lewis Ferrel said ‘ After induction, it is clear that The Calcio Group care about their local communities and care about their staff too. I was incredibly anxious about joining a workplace before Calico, it’s a very friendly place and they’ve helped to make me feel welcome and comfortable. I’m very grateful for the opportunity they’ve given me, to gain valuable experience while helping to make other people’s lives better.”

Sam Howarth, Head of Social Enterprise at Calico, said, ‘It’s important to us a company to make a real difference to people’s lives, and we feel we are doing that by creating these positions. With youth employment opportunities in decline as a result of the pandemic, we feel we can help by enabling younger people in the region to get into work and hopefully gain experience that will also help their long term future. Our skills and employability service is already working with hundreds of young adults in the region through our apprenticeships, traineeships, support programmes and recruitment services.

All future Kickstart opportunities are advertised with Job Centre Plus and you can get details from your job coach.
